Taiwan Tech USR Program, Engineers in Action, gains global spotlight at Osaka World Expo.

Taiwan Tech’s Engineers in Action (EIA) Program was invited to Japan from September 25 to 27 to jointly set up a short-term exhibition booth with Osaka Institute of Technology at the “Future Life Village” zone of the Osaka World Expo. The exhibit showcased Taiwan Tech’s international University Social Responsibility (USR) action outcomes in Yilan, Indonesia, Japan, and Vietnam. As the only USR program from Taiwan selected to present at the Osaka World Expo, the three-day exhibit drew over 600 visitounderscoringting Taiwan Tech’s strong internatiopresencelity in sustainapracticestice.

Since receiving support from the Ministry of Education’s University Social Responsibility (USR) Program, the Engineers in Action Program has been committed to integrating interdisciplinary expertise with local needs, guiding students into real-world social settings. By combining engineering, design, humanities, and management with innovative thinking, the program addresses community challenges and has. It has achieved tangible outcomes in areas such as environmental improvement, infrastructure development, sustainability education, and cross-cultural exchange. Through hands-on engagement in cross-cultural contexts, students cultivate global perspectives, practical skills, and a sustainability mindset, demonstrating the potential of a new generation of changemakers emerging from local communities in Taiwan and reaching the international stage.

As one of the world’s leading international expos, the Osaka World Expo features national pavilions centered on innovative technologies and sustainable action, serving as an essential platform for cross-border exchange. Taiwan Tech’s invitation to exhibit signifies international recognition of its USR initiatives. It marks the program as the only USR project from Taiwan to be showcased at the Osaka World Expo, further enhancing Taiwan’s visibility in the global higher education sustainability arena.

During the exhibition, students from Osaka Institute of Technology who had actively participated in international field projects this year also joined the booth team, personally introducing the two universities’ cross-national collaborations and USR achievements to visitors. This interaction transformed the booth into a vibrant space for exchange in international education and sustainable practice.

The exhibition featured action-record videos from multiple international sites, allowing visitors to see how students address local challenges in unfamiliar cultural contexts through engineering solutions, design thinking, and teamwork. The display highlighted the core spirit of the Engineers in Action Program: transforming knowledge into action, and action into meaningful change.

On the opening day of the exhibition, Yu-Jou Lin, Vice Consul of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Osaka, paid a special visit to the booth and expressed high praise for the philosophy of the Engineers in Action Program, while also expressing hopes for expanded Taiwan–Japan collaboration and exchange in the future. The event also received strong support from the Taiwan Tech Alumni Association, which has worked closely with the Engineers in Action USR team for many years. This year, Vice Chairman Han-Wei Chen and Secretary General Wen-Hsu Su traveled to Osaka in person to participate in the USR international showcase at the Expo.

The two alumni representatives engaged in lively exchanges with Japanese partners and Taiwan–Japan student teams, affirmed the students’ professionalism and initiative demonstrated through cross-national practice, and pledged continued support for USR initiatives to help expand partnerships and resource connections.

Through this exhibition, Taiwan Tech and Osaka Institute of Technology jointly presented a range of cross-national USR achievements, including community-based governance initiatives focused on environmental conservation, infrastructure projects that improve local quality of life, sustainable education programs implemented in Southeast Asia, and exchange activities that foster cultural understanding among international students. The exhibition also featured action-record videos from multiple global sites, allowing visitors to see how students address local challenges in unfamiliar cultural contexts through the application of ring expertise, design thinking, and teamwork. These displays highlighted the core spirit of the Engineers in Action Program: transforming knowledge into action, and action into meaningful change.

The Engineers in Action Program demonstrates Taiwan Tech’s achievements in cultivating talent with interdisciplinary integration capabilities and capacity for sustainable practice. Looking ahead, the program will continue to deepen collaboration with international partner institutions and expand global USR action sites, enabling students to learn and grow in real-world, cross-cultural, and multidisciplinary environments. Upholding the mission of education through practice, Taiwan Tech remains committed to nurturing “world-class engineers” equipped with both a global perspective and the ability to take meaningful local action.
