Taiwan Tech students break creative limits in Resident Artists’ Interdisciplinary Exhibition.
The “You, as a Unit” Tech-Art Interactive Exhibition at Taiwan Tech officially opened on May 26. Guided by resident artists and three tech-art teams, five creative groups composed of students from diverse departments - including design, electronics, mechanical engineering, computer science, and English - collaborated. Inspired by campus life, they explored perception and critical issues to create multiple interactive works featuring light and imagery, showcasing the innovative cross-disciplinary fusion of technology and art.

Since the 2023 academic year, Taiwan Tech’s Center for General Education has been promoting the “Resident Artist Program,” focusing on “Tech-Art” to broaden interdisciplinary perspectives under the goal of technological innovation and to cultivate future talents with creativity and artistic literacy.
In his speech, Vice President Jhy-Chern Liu shared the educational experiences of Hong-Yi Chen, president of the Outstanding Alumni Association, highlighting how general education inspired and greatly benefited his career development. Vice President Chao-Jeng Wang also emphasized that “technology should serve humanity.” While professional disciplines enhance knowledge and skills, general education enlightens life’s direction. Students participating in this course have taken an important step forward.
Building on previous successes, in 2025, the program invited “Dangruo Tech-Art” as resident artists to teach the general education course “Introductory Cross-Disciplinary Art Creation.” They collaborated with “Gumi,” experts in mechanical systems integration, and “San-Shi,” a digital experience design team, to realize a multi-faceted connection between art, technology, and education.
The exhibition, titled “You, as a Unit,” highlights “you” as the central figure, extending into outdoor campus spaces. Students observed everyday environments and potential issues, creating five distinctive artworks that express their perspectives.
“Re:Style - Co-Creation of Styling from a Gender Perspective” is a collaborative work by Yin-Tong Ye and Shu-Hsian Tsai from the Industrial Design Division of the Department of Design, Hsin-Yu Yang from the English Department at NTNU, and Yi-Jia Qiao from the Chinese Literature Department at NTU. Through an interactive “role-switching” dress-up experience, the project explores gender issues.
The creative team behind “Re:Style – Co-Creation of Styling from a Gender Perspective” consists of four women. Hsin-Yu Yang from NTNU’s English Department explained that through the interactive “role-switching” dress-up experience, the project encourages audiences to reflect on gender stereotypes.
At the opening event, the “Muu” creative team introduced their work—an interactive light and shadow installation inspired by emotions. The team includes Yan-Yan Ye from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering; You-Quan Zheng, Yu-Jun Huang, and Zhi-Yu Chen from the Industrial Design Division of the Department of Design; and Hao-En Tsai and Si-Yu Lai from the Business Design Division.
Inspired by emotions, “Muu” was conceived after team member Hao-En Tsai from the Business Design Division noticed that many peers face academic and career pressures. They created a fictional creature that “feeds on emotions,” allowing viewers to input their feelings and trigger an interactive light and shadow experience.
“Lotus Bloom – Wishing You a Wonderful Day” is a mechanical interactive installation shaped like a lotus flower. Pressing a button delivers a warm, caring greeting reminiscent of an elder’s comforting words. The team includes Ting-Hsuan Hsu from the Department of Industrial Management, Hsuan-Hao Liu from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Wei-Sheng Weng from Electronic and Computer Engineering, and Qiao-Zhen Yang and Ming-Yi Lin from the Business Design Division of the Department of Design.
“Lotus Bloom – Wishing You a Wonderful Day” draws inspiration from traditional elder greeting images and features a mechanical lotus-shaped interactive installation. It aims to bring warm, caring messages - like those from elders - into the busy campus environment.
“Stranger Voice Projector” connects strangers at distant locations through an interactive telephone device, creating subtle interpersonal interactions. The team includes Jun-Ting Shen from the Graduate Institute of Color and Illumination Technology, Yu-Chen Wu from the Graduate Institute of Electronic and Computer Engineering, Ting-Yan Wu from the Business Design Division of the Department of Design, and Yi-Wei Huang from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
“Stranger Voice Projector” team member Jun-Ting Shen from the Graduate Institute of Color and Illumination Technology explained that although we pass countless people daily, we rarely get the chance to truly connect. The installation invites two strangers in different locations to engage in a phone conversation - the longer the call, the clearer the image becomes - creating subtle interpersonal interactions.
The exhibition also features a specially designed LINE Bot interactive game called “Pixel Map.” You-Cheng Chen from the Department of Electrical Engineering explained that visitors can use their phones to unlock hidden campus missions and explore overlooked scenes in daily life.
Resident artist Bo-Yu Wang emphasized that the greatest value of this course lies in cross-disciplinary collaboration, enabling students from diverse departments to spark brilliant results. He looks forward to continuing this “cross-domain hybrid” spirit in the future, applying what they have learned across more fields.
The Center for General Education launched the Tech-Art interdisciplinary program and courses, aiming to bring a more artistic atmosphere to the Taiwan Tech campus and nearby communities. It also allows students from Taiwan Tech and the other two Taiwan Tech System universities to take courses without prerequisites or prior knowledge, getting close to art, practicing self-expression and social care through creation, and demonstrating the motivation and determination for self-improvement - fulfilling the ideals of holistic education.
