The admission offered by Oxford to an NTUST student is an indication that graduates from the vocational school system can also go to the best universities if they work hard. Sally Chia-Ling Kao, a senior at the Department of Applied Foreign Languages, has already received admission notices from seven top British universities, including Oxford and the University of Edinburgh. If Sally decides to go to Oxford for advanced studies, she will be the first Oxford-bound NTUST graduates.
Prof. Wang Shih-Ping, Head of AFL Department and Sally’s advisor, said that Sally is able to be granted with admissions by Oxford, Edinburgh, University of Warwick, University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, Lancaster University, and Newcastle University because of 8.0 high IELTS score, excellent academic records, and active involvement in research projects as well as extracurricular activities.
Sally said she had the chance to go to an international school in Shanghai because of her father’s job there. Although she left the school earlier to come back to Taiwan, her learning experience in the American style education system has nourished her interest in English. She enrolled in Hsin-Chu Vocational High once she came home and was admitted to NTUST through the Multi-Stars project.
According to Sally, she forced herself to take part in several students clubs for international exchange. She was once the deputy student chairperson of NTUST’s International Student Exchange Program. She volunteered to help international students to cope with lives in Taiwan and has been heavily involved in international volunteer programs such as Summer Deaflympics Taipei 2009 and International Skating Union.
